The Jakarta International School (JIS), founded in 1951, is a private, coeducational day school which draws on North American and other curriculum models from preparatory (pre-kindergarten) through grade 12. The School is established under Indonesian law, which gives it the status of a foundation (Yayasan). The school year comprises 2 semesters extending approximately from August 7 to December 19 and from January 12 to June 3.
The curriculum offered has a strong international focus. The language of instruction is English. Beginning from grade 3, students are required to take Indonesian language studies, culture, and geography. The International Baccalaureate Diploma and Advanced Placement courses are offered in addition to the regular diploma, and over 97 percent of graduating seniors go on to a university or college. JIS is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools.
There are 254 full-time and part-time faculty members. Of the total student enrollment 497 are American citizens, 363 are Indonesians, and 1,576 are from 58 other countries. The School has 3 campuses totaling 46 acres. Facilities are mostly air-conditioned and include 184 classrooms, 4 theaters, 3 cafeterias, 3 tennis courts, 6 gymnasiums, 6 playing fields, 3 swimming pools, 18 science laboratories, 22 computer laboratories, a design technology facility, and 4 libraries with a total of 130,000 volumes.
